Statistics on alcohol-impaired driving in the United States are based on arrest records for people who have recently driven under the influence of alcohol. The latest BRFSS data cover the years 2006-2014. During this time, the rate of arrests for DWI fell by 27 percent, or 10 percent, compared to previous years. Meanwhile, men were four times more likely to report a recent arrest for DWI than women.

As of 2015, alcohol-impaired driving arrests made up about ten percent of all reported offenses. However, the rate varied 32-fold across states. Overall, alcohol-impaired driving arrest rates fell by 13 percent from the high in 2003. However, the rate among young drivers declined by nearly 70 percent.
As of 2015, men were the most commonly injured and killed in alcohol-impaired crashes. While men were the most commonly killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, women were the least likely to be involved in them.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 21 percent of driving-age adults reported drinking and driving in the past year. Of these, 10 percent of driving trips involved drivers who had a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher. According to NHTSA data, more than half of such trips originated in bars, taverns, or restaurants. The rest originated at a person’s home.
